Katie Holland is a Chicago-based artist who works in painting, mixed media and craft. Katie hails from Florida, where she received formal training in the visual arts at the University of Central Florida, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a painting specialization. In her chosen mediums, Katie has a strong interest in the visualization of female imagery, often compelling her to directly and indirectly compare the image of the mid 20th century woman with today’s media-created ideal. Often referring to vintage etiquette books and advertising for inspiration, she enjoys exploring this theme through multiple mediums and creating imagery which lets the viewer explore the piece in depth visually.
Team HLB had the opportunity to experience Katie’s creative vision by reviewing the Katie Holland Paper Collage Packs from her Etsy store. The packs are a mix of vintage and new papers that Katie curates herself and can contain pages from all sorts of old paper products; ‘lesson books, children’s books, etiquette books, dictionary, color sample swatches, patterned scrapbook paper, wallpaper sample sheets’ just to name a few. Each pack has about 20 pieces of paper, so your creativity can go on and on and on during your next craft session. Katie also wrote a great blog post with some inspiration of how to use these packs! Here’s what some of our HLB Team Members had to say about the Katie Holland Paper Collage Packs they tried:
Every time I read a magazine I get flashbacks of ripping out the pages, cutting words and pictures out, and then gluing it all down as a cover for my school binders. Though I don’t do that anymore (not because I don’t want to obviously), I could not wait to see what parts and pieces would arrive in my paper collage pack. There’s so much to choose from – different textures, colors, sizes, shapes. Everything arrived clean and crisp and ready for destroying! There were a few pages that I got caught up reading – vintage books are always amazing to look at.
Truthfully, self care is something that I struggle to provide myself. For me this needs to happen in several different ways: both physical through movement like yoga, running on the treadmill, or a walk outside, but also in non-physical methods like writing, reading, and creative expression.
Katie’s kits provide the perfect opportunity to tap into my inner creative and participate in some much needed moments of quiet, self care, and imagination. Besides, who doesn’t love breaking out a glue stick and fun tape every once and awhile? – Katie // Journey Thru 30
I loved using Katie’s Paper Collage Pack during my routine art-making this month. There is something so encouraging about having a stack of material ready and waiting to be incorporated into my sketchbook. I know I’ll keep coming back to this pack when I need a little creative inspiration, or when I want to challenge myself to work outside my comfort zone. – Elizabeth // On Tap for Today
I am loving the variety of papers in this pack. Not only the various shapes and sizes, but the colors, different types of paper, and images. Anyone who does any type of paper based crafting or art could put this to good use! – Kelly // @KellyNigl
Katie’s paper packs are the perfect option to challenge someone like me who is incredibly Type A! My tendency is to use crafting materials that match perfectly, but I had so much fun using the variety of papers I received in my pack. The wide variety of textures, colors, and words allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and create a collage I otherwise wouldn’t have seen. I love the ability to support small businesses and Katie offers an awesome product for the craft-minded crowd. – Mindy // just a one girl revolution
