I’m happy to announce the selection for the very first #hlbbookclub:
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum.
Of course, the story of Dorothy and her journey to Oz is a classic tale we all know; many of us have movie magic and Judy Garland to thank for giving us the desire to jump into a make-believe land of our dreams as children ourselves.
We chose The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as our first book of the #hlbbookclub for a few reasons.
First, all fourteen of Baum’s Oz books, including this series introduction, are in the public domain of the United States, meaning that you can download the e-books for free on your e-reader, smart phone, tablet, or computer. [though we welcome to read the IRL book, too, of course! ] You can get your free e-copies of our selection here: kindle edition, nook edition, or the regular old online edition.
Second, it’s a classic! We want the #hlbbookclub to cover both newly released, trendy titles and the old, yet loved, books we’ve let gather dust on our library shelves for far too long.
Third, we’ve got some cross-country party planning going on! Have you heard of the upcoming Disney movie, Oz the Great and Powerful? The film is inspired by our book club selection and set as a prequel to the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. The trailer looks rad and since the movie releases in early March we’ve decided it’s perfect timing to hold a cross country meet up!
Here’s the #hlbbookclub plan:
Step 1: Get your hands on a copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Step 2: Read the book. Complete the reading within the next three weeks. Tweet your thoughts, comments, opinions, and the like with the #hlbbookclub hashtag. [use it on instagram, too!]
