Friday Feature: BakeryManis

Welcome to Andrea of BakeryManis!

1. What is your name, blog name, and how did you create your blog title?

I am Andrea Devon, and my little blog is BakeryManis. I am really excited about whole-foods baking and cooking, but I want my goodies to be sweet and tasty; Manis means ‘sweet’ or ‘cute’ in the Indonesian language. It was maybe not the best idea to choose a foreign language blog title, but I think it’s working pretty well! It’s always a conversation starter!

2. What’s one goal you’re working towards right now?

I have recently begun teaching vegetarian cooking classes, and I love sharing recipes and tips with students and friends. But I really want to expand my knowledge of nutrition and health, and so I am thinking about taking some courses for nutrition education.
3. How would you describe your blogging style?

My blog is really a catalog of what is happening in my kitchen in the moment: something I made up just a few minutes ago, something I’ve been wanting to create, a new ingredient that has piqued my interest. It’s all grounded in a real kitchen, and real ingredients. I would like to think that my blog is approachable and fairly witty- not dogmatic (well, not usually!) or preachy, and hopefully appeals to existing vegans and vegetarians, and perhaps inspires others to experiment with animal-free meals.
4. What is your tagline and why?

“growing, baking, and eating on the island” I chose this tagline because I have been very interested in growing my own foods for years now (despite my multiple moves over the past year!). And of course I do a lot of baking and eating. I want BakeryManis to be a resource for all these food-related activities, so I have lots of links to resources here in Hawaii, including organic resources, lots of recipes and blog resources, and veg-friendly restaurants on Maui and Oahu (which are featured on Go Dairy Free, too!)

5. What is something you’ve learned recently that you found interesting?

I attended a chocolate lecture with Slow Food Maui, and I learned about varietals and blends of chocolate, the process of making chocolate from pod to chocolate bar, and the process of ‘tempering’ chocolate (heating, cooling, and then heating to create that perfect ‘snap’). I have yet to attempt it at home!

6. What’s the average amount of time you spend writing a blog post?

Sometimes just a few minutes, but sometimes it takes months! Sometimes I can sit down and write a quick little post about a great meal I just ate, but other times I want to write about favorite bloggers & writers, or write something a bit smarter about vegetarianism or a specific ingredient. These posts take research, editing, and lots of time in the drafts folder!

7. What is something about you that would shock us?

Not shocking at all, but interesting? I have a serious tea habit, and it is easily the most expensive thing I purchase. I buy the Frontier Jasmine green tea and it costs about $40/pound! It’s organic, fair-trade, and I purchase it in bulk, so it’s totally righteous! But I can’t think of a better way to start my day!
